Should you choose vertical or horizontal striped tiling?

Choosing between vertical or horizontal striped wall tiling can be a challenge, and there are a number of different things to consider. These include:

  • The size of the space- if you are tiling just one wall or area of the room with striped tiling, then you should consider the size of the space. For narrow spaces, horizontal striped tiles can make the space feel wider than it really is, as the eye is drawn along, rather than up. For smaller spaces like a kitchen splash back, a vertical stripe can make this area feel more roomy. In general, horizontal stripes will make a smaller room feel larger.
  • The size of the tiles- some tiles can be applied in multiple ways, like subway tiles for example, which will look just as effective with either a horizontal stripe or a vertical stripe. However, for some tiles, in small or large formats, these will look most effective in one particular direction, perhaps due to the size restrictions of the space, which will not allow a full stripe effect to be created.
  • The stripe frequency- if you want to alternate each row of tiles to create a striped effect, this can be very effective for smaller spaces and feature walls, and either horizontal or vertical stripes can be effective. However, for using a striped pattern across your whole room, with less frequency, a vertical stripe can often be a better choice.
