Here at Tiles 2 Go, we are Preston’s leading tiling experts. From tiles that can be used throughout the home, to specific tiling layouts, we are always up to date with the latest knowledge. One of the popular trends is currently to use small format tiles in areas of visual interest. But what is a small format tiles, and how can you use them effectively? Well, there are a number of considerations, including the size of the room and the tiling layout. As a result, we have produced this guide to using small format tiles.

What is a small format tile?

First of all, what exactly is a small format tile? Well, while large format tiles are any tiles with a side length of 30 cm or over, a small format tile is around the 10 cm mark, or less than this. Regular tiles tend to be 11.4 cm, so anything smaller than that can be categorized as a small format tile. This covers a range of options, from smaller subway tiles, to tiny mosaic tiles.

Using small format tiles

Small format tiles can be used effectively in a variety of ways. This includes:

  • border tiles- small format tiles are perfect for border tiles, and they can be used in a completely different tiling pattern to the rest of the room to add even more attention
  • splash backs- in a small bathroom or kitchen, small tiles can be a perfect way to draw attention and add detail to your splash-back zone. However, in large spaces this can look overly “busy” and detract from the desired effect.

Laying smaller tiles can be more time consuming, and more difficult than laying large tiles. However, the overall effect can be worth the effort.
